My profile: Ken Usmar

Crop15

My writing experience covers a diverse range of assignments, including advertorials and website copy, press releases, news reporting, proof reading and editing.
In addition I have covered sporting events, WI meetings, council meetings, general and local body elections and court proceedings.

I was assistant editor for a specialist rural publication for two years where I wrote hundreds of stories on dairy and livestock farming, horticulture, organics and the environment.
For my work on that publication I won the Young (New) Journalist of the Year (Associate Newspaper Category) - Independent Better Newspapers 2007 and the Environment Bay of Plenty Environment Award, Media Category, 2008.

Prior to that I wrote a weekly opinion column for two years at a daily newspaper where I also wrote all types of news stories.

Along the way I have written hundreds of music reviews and photographed dozens of music concerts. Prior to taking up writing I spent over 20 years working in the music industry in both New Zealand and the UK.

I also write about employment relations and legal matters. I am a qualified legal executive and I spent several years working in the field of industrial relations.

I also have a less serious side that often leads me to write satirical and humorous articles.

To date my articles and pictures have appeared in The Weekend Sun, Coast & Country, Senior Style, Creative Juice, Waterline, New Farm Dairies, Dannevirke News, Hawkes Bay Today, Wairarapa Times Age, Rainbow Network, New Zealand Musician, Drum Connexions and on SunLive.

I am available for commissions and I have written for daily and annual publications, and all points in between, so I am extremely familiar with the different requirements of each. I have never missed a deadline and I pride myself in delivering good print ready copy to my publishers on time every time.

Feeding the world

06 January, 2011

We could do it , but time is running out for New Zealand to create for itself an opportunity that could turn our economy around and set us up for a great future. But if a concerted effort is not made very soon it will slip through our fingers and somebody else will sieze the opportunity.

Safety in numbers?

06 January, 2011

Lies, damned lies and statistics. This is an opinion piece about occupational safety and health practices in the New Zealand workplace. The picture you get depends upon which numbers you deem significant.

Cutting out the scalpers

06 January, 2011

Governments are good at responding to public opinion and appearing to enact legislation to deal with their concerns, but so often the law only goes half way and many of the activities it purports to deal with are left unaffected by it. The Major Events Management Act 2007 is a good example of this.

Sensible sentencing - calling a spade a spade

06 January, 2011

Most people see problems with our system of justice and especially sentencing. There are always calls for tougher legislation, but there are already adequate penalties for most offences. One problem seems to be the 1984 style doublespeak that surrounds sentencing while the short term thinking of judges and and the subsequent tinkerings by the parole board complete the dysfunctional picture.

Flying visits

The Wooden Ox

06 January, 2011

Probably every home has one of these today, if they only realised it. Yours probably won't be made of wood, but you almost certainly have one. An ox used to be a beast of burden so it is easy to see why this invention was originally named the wooden ox.

Who's the barking one here?

06 January, 2011

I'm not just having a whine here, but something really has to be done about dog ownership and responsibilities in New Zealand.
